The New Zealand Fancy Rat Society (NZFRS) was formed in 2024. We are a supportive, friendly group who are focused on education and fun! The main goals of the NZFRS are to advocate for pet rats in New Zealand, provide support and mentoring for new breeders and rat owners, and create a list of people breeding ethically to help pet owners find good breeders when looking for new pets. Anyone who has an interest in Fancy Rats in New Zealand is welcome to become a general member of the NZFRS and we encourage breeders and rescues to join us as approved and vetted members. 

We invite everyone to join as a general member - this membership gets you all of the fun and none of the responsibility. This is a non-voting, social membership that allows members to access benefits listed below. 

We welcome people who are interested in taking on more responsibility for the direction of the club to join as official members. Ideally you would already be contributing to  the popularity and enjoyment of rats in NZ in some way - this could be through your role as a medical professional, your shop, or your activity on social media. All registered breeders are automatically official members.
