The Registered Rat Breeders formed in 2019 when three breeders - White Rose Rattery, Shiloh's Rattery, and Scruffians Rattery - decided to team up to work to better the health and temperament of pet rats in New Zealand, as well as work on some of the more uncommon coat types and markings. The Registered Breeders grew to include over 20 individual breeders at its peak, all committed to making Aotearoa's pet rats the best they could be.
The New Zealand Fancy Rat Society (NZFRS) was formed in 2024 in order to include more rat enthusiasts in the club and to 'make things official' by becoming an incorporated society. We are a supportive, friendly group focused on education and fun! The main goals of the NZFRS are to advocate for pet rats in New Zealand, provide support and mentoring for new breeders and rat owners, and create a list of people breeding ethically to help pet owners find good breeders when looking for new pets. Anyone who has an interest in Fancy Rats in New Zealand is welcome to become a general member of the NZFRS and we encourage breeders, rescues, medical professionals and anyone who would like to contribute in some way to the Society to become official members.
