In comparison to the rest of the world, New Zealand's variety of Fancy Rat colours, coat types and markings are very limited. The New Zealand rat community has always been relatively small, and unlike many overseas countries, importing new rats (and therefore new genes) was very challenging. Due to the havoc that invasive wild rats cause in our native environments, importing Fancy Rats from overseas is now illegal. Despite the limited genes available within the NZ Rat population, we still have beautiful rats with lovely markings and our very own special coat type. The angora coat type is exclusive to New Zealand fancy rats. The angora gene produces lovely plush long haired coats. Check out the pages below for more information on the coat types, colours and markings that are available in New Zealand!
